From the city of North Little Rock:

North Little Rock residents can call 1-888-728-4004 to report power outages due to winter storms. Residents also can e-mail nlred@nlrelectric.com to report an outage in their area.

North Little Rock crews have been preparing for months for inclement weather by outlining procedures, determining standby crew assignments and trimming trees to assure power lines are clear from falling limbs.

Residents can ensure their safety by staying away from downed power lines and debris and reporting them immediately to the North Little Rock Electric, police or fire departments. If using portable generators, do so exactly as the manufacturer specifies to be certain there is no health or fire hazard to you or your home.

For the latest information, tune in to local radio stations for updates to your area. Finally, help your neighbors and ask for help when you, a family member or neighbor need it.

Where did the time go?

My oldest child, Patrick, turned 27 today.

His landmark doesn’t particularly make me feel any older — we all become a day older every day. it’s just that the fact that some of us may be closer to the short end of the candle wick bothers some people more than others.

It does seem remarkable that 27 years have passed in Patrick’s life. In thinking back to the day he was born, it does seem like 27 years ago.

I would have to say that he has used his early adult years wisely, as far as exploring what he should be when he grows up. He has:

  • Built, or “digitally designed,” newspaper pages in Fort Worth;
  • Worked for Kinko’s in Arlington, Texas, and Boston;
  • Photographed amateur sports events in the Dallas-Fort Worth area;
  • Taught classes at Apple Computer stores; and
  • Served as a Mac computer technician for a recording studio that produces a nationally syndicated radio show from Weatherford, Texas.

The fun part of his being 27 is that we are still close, at least chatting online or e-mailing everyday and talking 2-3 times a week by phone.

Have a great day, Patrick.

E-mail a help or hindrance?

A colleague and I were discussing all the e-mail we get in relation to our jobs. Initially, we were talking about how much we get and how you can get behind if you don’t take care of your inbox each day.

When I wondered aloud if the extra workload were worth the convenience it provides, he pointed out that being able to receive news releases from different groups DOES make for less rewriting and typing in news items that are of interest to our readers.

Just like anything, there is a good side and a bad side. Spam or more typing? Some days it’s a tough call. But I’ll bet we aren’t returning to a time without it, are we?
